Welcome to Pop's Garage!

Pop's Garage, not a real place, so don't look for it in the Yellow Pages, lol. Actually, my wife has called me "Poppa" since before we got married, and I thought it would be a good name for a garage if I were to ever open one. So I'm using it here.

On to the purpose of this blog. I love pretty much anything to do with cars. Mostly old muscle cars, classic trucks, mini trucks, diesel trucks, hot rods and some sport compacts. Some times, I either get to working on a project, or have ideas for one and I like to share the info with others. There are also times I am working on a car for someone and I need to complain about the engineers bad ideas, or rave about the good ones. So this is my place to do that.

A little background on me and my automotive experience. I have been driving since 1992, when I turned 16. I have worked in the automotive industry in some way since 1994, off and on, either selling parts, delivering parts, installing parts or making parts. I have been in to building custom cars for just as long. I have built about 10 cars of my own and helped my friends on dozens more in the past. I have been in 5 car clubs since I was 16, and president of 3 of those 5. The club names were Syndicate (Dayton, OH), Furious Stylez (president), Crossroads Customs, 0-60 of Dayton (President), and Positive Perception (President, current club my wife and I have been trying to start since '08).

So that's all about me. Later I'll post about some past, present and future projects. C-ya!

Finally, Garage Shelf Pictures

Sorry it took so long, but here they are. They should be in order from start to finish. The only pic's I don't have are the one's after the pegboard on the workbench and the 6' section going across the space.

Latest Garage Project

This week is going to be busy, especially since I'm starting this project on a Wednesday! Tonight, I purchased the materials to build 3 new storage shelf sections to get my tools organized and get a lot of other stuff off of the floor and out of the way. Another reason is because we'd like to get this house sold, and this project all together will help a ton. I am also going to paint the space and I need to do some repairs on the ceiling. I am also adding 8 4' fluorescent light fixtures hoping to help us see better. Anything will be better than the 3 single light bulbs we have in there now.

The shelves I am building are from a project in the September 2010 issue of The Family Handyman. All of the materials for a total of 24' of 7' tall by 2' deep shelves ran approximately $150.00. The materials for each 8' section consist of 8 2"x4"x8 for uprights, 8 2"x2"x8' for shelf braces run horizontally, 2 sheets of 4'x8'x3/4" plywood or OSB, I opted for OSB since it was still strong but less expensive. You'll also need screws in 1-1/2", 2-1/2" and 5". The 5" screws to screw the shelves to the wall seem to be hard to come by for me, I looked everywhere and didn't find them. So I got 3-1/2" screws and will either use L brackets or some other method to tie into the wall. I'm sure these shelves wont move when loaded, but you can never be too safe.

So, if anyone wants info on this project as I go along, please ask away!

2011 Ford Fiesta

So, I'm looking at a new or new to me car for work that will be good on gas. I'm really starting to like the new 2011 Ford Fiesta. The styling is great and NOTHING like the Fiesta of the '80s.

Now Scheduling for Automotive Photo Shoots

I'm currently scheduling automotive photo shoots for the summer and early fall of 2010, and spring 2011. This can be individuals, clubs, shows and other events. For individual and club sessions, I will take about 50 photos of your vehicle(s) and provide you with a 8"x10" print of your favorite image starting at $25.00 for the session and print. After the photo shoot, we will either mail or hand deliver your print, depending on location. If you see other pictures you would like printed, up to a 13"x19", we can print them for you. And for shows and events, we will try to take at least one picture per vehicle, for $100 an event. After the event, we will provide you a CD or DVD of all unedited images for $50.

Ideal times to schedule a shoot will be within about an hour of sunrise, or about 2 hours during sunset. Also, any overcast day will be OK, but clear days are preferred. We can suggest a location, or you may choose anywhere in the Dayton area. We are on the Montgomery/Warren/Greene county borders in south Dayton, so you know where we would be coming from.

We will be attending the Bellbrook Lions Club Festival Car Show on 08/21/2010 so you can schedule or talk with us then. Contact us at photo@jgmconst.com if interested.

We're back!

We have made it back home safely. Just barely anyway. Bad storms from NC to WV made the return home from Myrtle Beach a little crazy, especially going over the mountains.

The rest of our vacation was great! The weather was perfect, 80's and sun most days. We spent a lot of time by the pool getting as much sun as we could before returning to gloomy old Ohio. It was a shock to the system coming from 80's in SC to 50's in OH.

Anyhow, we are back and I plan to get some informative posts going soon.

Getting Ready For Our Trip

In about 21 hours from now (7:15am) we will be on our way to Florida to visit family and on the 3rd head up to Myrtle Beach for 2 weeks. We can hardly wait! We've wanted to get on our way weeks ago. Today I have to get the van packed up. Kinda wish I could have done it yesterday, but Ash had a ton of laundry to do and I had to take Charlie to the vet for shots and a check-up. Packing has new challenges now with Cameron added to the family, with more clothes and toys, a double stroller, plus her being in a seat we used to have folded away for more room. But I'll get it figured out.
Less than 24 hours!

Just for the record. . . .

I thoroughly dislike mowing the grass! That is all. . . . . . . hahaha!

Well, yesterday was the first mow of the year for us, and I cut all 5 acres. Well, it actually took 2 days to do and I finished today. The first cut seems to always be the most involved, especially when your front 2 acres are filled with trees, downed branches and EXTRA high grass over the septic leach bed, and the rear 3 acres are overgrown from not cutting all year in '09. It took me the better part of 6 hours to cut the back yard and back 40 of our property, and then another hour to cut the front yard.

Today took a couple hours longer than usual though because the belt came off of the mower deck in the middle of mowing. And it didn't help that the deck was fill with grass that had to be pulled out. So, I pulled the deck off to clean it out and in the process, I find that all 3 blades are extremely dull. I would have been better off trying to cut the grass with the back side of a butter knife! I put everything back together though after doing a little filing on the blades and got the yard done.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I AM FRIED! I got burnt to a crisp. Silly me didn't put on sunscreen or any thing, so now my arms, face, head and the tops of my knees are as red as the paint on our Troy Built mower. Not fun times at all. Oh well, I got a good base for our Myrtle Beach trip in a couple weeks. Can't wait for that!

Well, that's all for my rant about mowing. I hope you all have better luck, and a smaller yard, than I! So, until the next post, God Bless, keep the rubber side down, and get to wrenchin'! I hope my posts can be an inspiration to all who read them.

Contemplating Another Vehicle Purchase

Every year when tax time comes around, I get to thinking about buying another car, and usually I know exactly what I want. For the last few years, including this one, I have wanted to buy another 1st gen Neon. I had a '98 almost 10 years ago and lost it to repo, and I've missed it ever since. Also, every year, my wife has wanted a replacement bridal set since what we bought when we got married wasn't what we wanted and she deserves something much nicer than what we got. Plus the gold is irritating her skin pretty bad. But that's another story. But, every year we have to give up our wants to pay for our needs, like clothes for the kids, food, pay bills, etc., and this year was no different. Although we did buy a "want" this year, a 2 week trip to North Myrtle Beach, SC, which we leave for in a few weeks.

So, I'm thinking ahead for next year, unless my income situation changes and we can afford the ring and another car payment or save to pay cash for them. I looked at Neon's 'til I was blue in the face until I knew for sure if I could get one or not this year. I found a lot of deals for under $1000 for good running cars, but none of them were "the one". A lot of them did come close though.

Now I'm stuck though. I have spent the last couple of days looking at 94-04 SN95's (Mustangs for those who might not know) and 94-up GM F-bodies (Camaros & Firebirds). I used to own each as well, but in 3rd gen bodies. I used to have a '80 Mustang Cobra, '86 Mustang GT, '89 Camaro RS, '89 Firebird Formula, and my wife's '82 Firebird SE. The only times I have driven a 4th gen in either brand was when I worked as a mechanic, and drove my in-laws '96 Formula. Right now, I'm leaning toward the SN95's. Even though I was raised on GM and Mopar cars, I think I might like the Ford change.

If I did go with a Mustang, I think it would be one with a 5.0, which I believe limits me to '94-95 years I believe. But I thought I read they have a 5.0 in 1999 and up models. Even though all I find are 4.6 references, like here. I won't mind a modular motor, but I hear the heads are a problem. As for the transmission, a manual is the only way to go I think, unless I have the coin for a built C4, which I don't yet. Colors aren't an issue, they don't make you faster or give you more power.

Another Camaro or Firebird would be great though too. Preferably an LS1 powered car, '98-02. The LT1 is fine, but I'm liking the tuning options for the LSx engines, and have since they came out.

No matter which I would choose to buy, it would have to be something reliable that I can drive everyday, in good condition and not be a money pit, for problems not upgrades. I would want it to be something that I can work on in a weekend and not have sitting on jack stands for weeks. Or worse yet, end up like my truck sitting in the barn for a few years.

I'll keep thinking about this, as I always do until I find something else to obsess about. It's spring, so cars and BMX are what's on my mind, after God and my family, of course.

So, until the next post, God Bless, keep the rubber side down, and get to wrenchin'! I hope my posts can be an inspiration to all who read them.

Carter's 3rd Birthday Party

This past weekend was Carter's 3rd birthday party, held at Rolandia/Magic Castle. Everyone had a great time, especially Carter! Pizza, cake, presents and arcade games, what more could he need. He got a lot of neat presents, but probably his favorite is the Imaginarium train table with some Thomas wooden trains.

Here are some pictures from the party and at home afterwards.

Still Learning Our Camera

Well, it's been about 10 days since getting our camera and I have been trying to absorb as much about photography and digital cameras, especially our, since our T1i arrived. And just when I thought I read and learned enough to start photographing the things I want to shoot, I find some video on YouTube, or a blog, or some other website with a bunch more information I never knew about.

Some videos I have been watching are from Bryan Peterson (YouTube - ppsop2009's Channel) , Rick Sammons (http://www.youtube.com/user/pixelmagic), CameraLabs.com (http://www.youtube.com/user/cameralabs) and PhotoClassPro (http://www.youtube.com/user/PhotoClassPro). These so far have been the most informative YouTube videos. If you are new to photography, or just looking for different techniques, I would suggest looking into these videos.

As far as websites go, my bookmark list has grown exponentially just in the last two weeks. So you can see where I've been, here are a list of some of the websites. Feel free to check them out!

As you can see, I have probably let myself get consumed with this subject, which can be good or bad. It's good because I can possibly turn this hobby into a source of income in the future, and it will make me and Ashley better photog's. It's bad because I have spent a lot of (maybe too much) time online or in books reading instead of paying more attention to my wife and kids. Hopefully to former will pay off and support the latter. In other words, I hope we can in fact make at least a part time "business" out of photography and help pay for activities and vacations with the family.

On a side note, we have all been sick, so we haven't been in the mood or able to go take more pictures lately, but we are all finally getting over our illnesses and will hopefully be out shooting soon.

Some cropping in Photoshop Camera Raw

Here is a picture Ashley took tonight of the barn, at dusk. The snow was falling and she was trying to capture that. The other 2 are the same picture cropped and made black and white and sepia tone, both with vignetting. Enjoy!

Camera Arrived Today!

Today was a happy day! UPS came knocking on our door this morning with gifts. Our camera, printer and other equipment got here and man are we excited. We just spent about 2-4 hours reading the manual and trying things out on our new Canon EOS Rebel T1i dSLR. Since all Ash and I have ever really had for a camera were point-and-shoot cameras, this is deffinately the best we've ever had. We can't get over how sharp the pictures are with just basic settings and not really fine tuning anything. It's taking some getting used to the use of a view finder instead of just an LCD screen, or not having the option of a view finder I should say. We haven't tried much with the live view yet, but I'm sure that will come soon enough.

Well, here a couple of our first shots! We took over 60 in about a 30 minute period!

So, until the next post, God Bless, keep the rubber side down, and get to wrenchin'! I hope my posts can be an inspiration to all who read them.

New Camera Equipment Purchase!

This weekend, Ashley and I finally had the opportunity to buy a "real" digital camera. I think we've spent at least 3-6 months searching for the camera that would best fit us, and I have to say, it's almost like buying a new car if you aren't sure of what's out there.

What we decided on was a Canon EOS Rebel T1i DSLR kit. We had suggestions from friends and other people who do photography for either a living or just a hobby, and most of them came back for either a Nikon or a Canon. Some suggestions were for the more pricey cameras the pro's use, others were more in our price range. At first we had decided on the Canon XSi, but after further consideration went with the T1i instead. We really wanted a camera that would be great for getting pic's of the kids and family events, some sports and auto racing, railroad pictures and other shots that just cannot be done well with a point-and-shoot. We are done with the grainy, out of focus, poor quality shots we get with our Sony p-n-s. It has done it's job over the last 2 years we have had it, but it is not the best for action shots that are required when you have a 3 year old and a 7 month old.

Also with the camera we ordered some accessories. First is a dedicated flash from Vivitar and a mini softbox/light diffuser from Dot Line. We also got a UV filter to help protect the lens. For a memory card we picked up a SanDisk Ultra II SDHC 8GB card. And to carry everything around we chose a Canon backpack style bag that has enough room for all of our stuff and space to spare. And as an added bonus, there was a $400.00 rebate on a Canon Pixma P9000 printer, so we ordered it as well. And the cool thing about the printer rebate is that we are paying $446.00 before the rebate. So we get the printer for $46.00 and change.

Now, where are we buying all of this photographic awesomeness? A place in New York City called B&H Photo and Video. Of all of the places we shopped locally and online for what we wanted, B&H had the best prices and deals, and the people are great to deal with. At least the 2 Ash and I dealt with were. So we strongly recommend you check them out if you're in the market for photo and video equipment.

Also, we were recommended a couple books, or I should say an author, that are very informative and keep things light, without bogging you down with digi-cam techie jargon. The author is Scott Kelby and the books are called "The Digital Photography Books, Vol. 1-3". We got ours on loan from the library, but we will probably buy them later on down the road. Maybe when a book store has a sale or we get a coupon. Another book we were told to get was the "Rebel T1i for Dummies". This one we did buy since it was camera specific and we needed all the help learning this thing that we can get.

So, by Wednesday, the 10th, UPS should be knocking at our door with our equipment, as long as there isn't a delay because of the snow over the weekend. I'll eventually post some info and our thoughts on the camera after we play around with it for a few days.

Wish us luck, or pray for us, lol.

So, until the next post, God Bless, keep the rubber side down, and get to wrenchin'! I hope my posts can be an inspiration to all who read them.

Ice is so uplifiting - Not in a good way!

Last night I was taking out the trash and noticed something alarming. Not too major, but enough to concern me. As I'm wheeling the trash cans out of the garage, I noticed the concrete apron of the driveway entering the garage has lifted up a good 2"-3"! Gotta love frost heave. When we moved to this house back in August of 2007, I noticed it and it wasn't bad at all. And last year during the summer, my son would ride his bike in and out of the garage with no problems. The concrete was lifted then, but only about a 1/2" or so and was like that since we've lived here. Now he'll need a ramp to jump out. I have a feeling that wonderful 70's construction is failing outside now. I've fixed just about everything inside by now.

I would imagine the gravel base was not deep enough or the soil wasn't compacted correctly, or at all. Heck, the gravel is probably only a couple inches deep, so no water can drain. So, it looks like this will be my next project for the spring and/or summer. Maybe we can swing pavers instead of concrete. That would be much nicer looking, but expensive, even with me doing all the labor. Maybe I can get my sister-in-law to help since she laid pavers around her pool practically by herself. Time to price materials, I guess.

So, until the next post, God Bless, keep the rubber side down, and get to wrenchin'!

Cruise-in Planning

I have always wanted to get a cruise-in started, but never had the pull, location or interested people to attend. I have been a part of someone else's cruise-in, sort-of, but never one on my own. When I was on the Street Racing Dayton Underground forum, I helped with a pretty large cruise-in that was always held at the Normandy Square shopping center in Centerville. But, those went south real fast because of people trying to be Johnny Hot Rod and speeding past the lot, doing burnouts and some even just coming out to start a fight with other members of the forums. But that was all with a different crowd of people and I had a different mindset then as well.

What I would like to do now is hold a cruise-in either every weekend, every 2 weeks or at least once a month, using a local church as the venue. Or maybe hold the cruise-in at a few select churches in the Dayton area. I'd like to see it open to all makes, models and styles. And it shouldn't compete with another cruise-in time or day.

My family and I attend Southbrook Christian Church, and I think it would be a great site for this event. The lot is huge and is easily accessible. But it's not real close to any major road, so there might be an issue with exposure to people driving by. There are other churches around Centerville that also have a large lot and a good location, but we have never been there and don't know if there would be many people interested.

Last October, our church had an event called Brookfest that had a car show, but we didn't make it in time to see what cars or people we showing. I was hoping we would have made it in time to talk to them about either joining our club, or at least the forums. Maybe this year we can.

Any thoughts and ideas would be great!

So, until the next post, keep the rubber side down, and get to wrenchin'!

I Met Chip Foose!

Just to let my readers know, I MET CHIP FOOSE! Yeah, I'm a little excited. He is definitely the good guy you see on TV. I got a couple autographs and a picture with him and my kids. Something cool we saw was Chip giving a kid drawing lessons while we were in line to see him. God love my wife for spending 7 hours at the show and standing with me for 2 hours in the line to meet Chip.

Cavalcade of Customs - Cincy . . . . . Chip Foose Will Be There!!!!

At first, I wasn't going to try too hard to go to this years Cavalcade of Customs show in Cincinnati. I figured it wasn't a big deal if we couldn't or didn't go since we would probably see some of the cars at other shows later in the year. But then I happened to read through the info again, and there it was, Chip Foose is going to be there on Saturday!! Needless to say, my wife and I are pretty excited to go. We just hope this snow doesn't keep him from being there.

The bad thing is though, I don't have anything for him to sign, so I printed a wallpaper from Magnaflow's website. Now I wish I would have bought at least one of the die cast cars I saw over the years that was a Foose designs replica.

By the way, if you're going and want to get together with me and my family, we'll be going sometime around 5PM.

So, until the next post, keep the rubber side down, and get to wrenchin'!

New Garage/Barn/Workshop Plans - Just Dreaming

For the past few weeks, my mind has been running wild with plans and ideas for a new barn to replace the not-so-well-built one we have now. What we have now is 32'x40', uninsulated, leaky - wind and water, and the gambrel roof is deflecting about a foot and roof joists are pulling away from the beams. After the last few major wind storms we have had, a lot of the roof has blown off and I noticed a week ago that some of the gutter and downspouts have blown down. Also, it only has a dirt floor and 7 foot ceiling, poor lighting and a workshop and tack room that are unusable for anything other than storage of items that can't really be hurt by the elements. Plus we have or had a groundhog living under the floor of the tack room. As of right now, we store our golf cart, lawn tractor and my truck in there, along with some old engine parts and my engine hoist.

Project "Locomotion" - 1982 Chevrolet C10 Silverado Diesel - Part 3

Here we go with Part 3 of my project plans. In this part, I will give the details on the interior, wheels, tires and the finish details.

INTERIOR
For the interior of my truck, I'm proposing to use a few different methods and materials. For the majority of the interior, I want to do a combination of leather and tweed, probably in a light saddle tan all around with the stitching and any piping matching closely to the main body color of the truck. The center console will be covered in fiberglass and also painted the body color. The dash will be painted the body color on the steel parts and the dashpad will be covered in the leather I decide to use. Any vents and trim will be made from billet aluminum, mostly mass produced parts available from LMC Truck. The steering wheel will be billet aluminum as well, leather wrapped from either Colorado Customs, Billet Specialties, or the maker of my wheels if available. The steering column will be a Flaming River or Ididit polished unit. The seats I plan to use will be re-covered seats from a late model F-body, or possibly a 'Vette. The carpet is going to be from ACC Mats in the light saddle tan.
