Welcome to Pop's Garage!

Pop's Garage, not a real place, so don't look for it in the Yellow Pages, lol. Actually, my wife has called me "Poppa" since before we got married, and I thought it would be a good name for a garage if I were to ever open one. So I'm using it here.

On to the purpose of this blog. I love pretty much anything to do with cars. Mostly old muscle cars, classic trucks, mini trucks, diesel trucks, hot rods and some sport compacts. Some times, I either get to working on a project, or have ideas for one and I like to share the info with others. There are also times I am working on a car for someone and I need to complain about the engineers bad ideas, or rave about the good ones. So this is my place to do that.

A little background on me and my automotive experience. I have been driving since 1992, when I turned 16. I have worked in the automotive industry in some way since 1994, off and on, either selling parts, delivering parts, installing parts or making parts. I have been in to building custom cars for just as long. I have built about 10 cars of my own and helped my friends on dozens more in the past. I have been in 5 car clubs since I was 16, and president of 3 of those 5. The club names were Syndicate (Dayton, OH), Furious Stylez (president), Crossroads Customs, 0-60 of Dayton (President), and Positive Perception (President, current club my wife and I have been trying to start since '08).

So that's all about me. Later I'll post about some past, present and future projects. C-ya!

Lost dog Found!

Charlie has been found. He made his way about 5 doors down the street. Now he is home. Thank you to Nana for finding him and thank you to the neighbors who  found him before that.

So, until the next post, God Bless, keep the rubber side down, and get to wrenchin'! I hope my posts can be an inspiration to all who read them. John, "Pop"

If not, he's a 5 yr. old full blood 15in. beagle, white, red and brown with a 3-4" white stripe across his back and tattoo markings inside his ears. If you can help or find him please let us know.

Update: Garage Progress

well today should be the final day that I work on phase 1 of the garage project. The shelves almost done and walls are half way painted. once i get this part done i can move on to putting up new lights and fixing the ceiling. the previous owners really butchered it with their fab mud work. So, I am off to work and get this thing done this week.

Latest Garage Project

This week is going to be busy, especially since I'm starting this project on a Wednesday! Tonight, I purchased the materials to build 3 new storage shelf sections to get my tools organized and get a lot of other stuff off of the floor and out of the way. Another reason is because we'd like to get this house sold, and this project all together will help a ton. I am also going to paint the space and I need to do some repairs on the ceiling. I am also adding 8 4' fluorescent light fixtures hoping to help us see better. Anything will be better than the 3 single light bulbs we have in there now.

The shelves I am building are from a project in the September 2010 issue of The Family Handyman. All of the materials for a total of 24' of 7' tall by 2' deep shelves ran approximately $150.00. The materials for each 8' section consist of 8 2"x4"x8 for uprights, 8 2"x2"x8' for shelf braces run horizontally, 2 sheets of 4'x8'x3/4" plywood or OSB, I opted for OSB since it was still strong but less expensive. You'll also need screws in 1-1/2", 2-1/2" and 5". The 5" screws to screw the shelves to the wall seem to be hard to come by for me, I looked everywhere and didn't find them. So I got 3-1/2" screws and will either use L brackets or some other method to tie into the wall. I'm sure these shelves wont move when loaded, but you can never be too safe.

So, if anyone wants info on this project as I go along, please ask away!

2011 Ford Fiesta

So, I'm looking at a new or new to me car for work that will be good on gas. I'm really starting to like the new 2011 Ford Fiesta. The styling is great and NOTHING like the Fiesta of the '80s.

Now Scheduling for Automotive Photo Shoots

I'm currently scheduling automotive photo shoots for the summer and early fall of 2010, and spring 2011. This can be individuals, clubs, shows and other events. For individual and club sessions, I will take about 50 photos of your vehicle(s) and provide you with a 8"x10" print of your favorite image starting at $25.00 for the session and print. After the photo shoot, we will either mail or hand deliver your print, depending on location. If you see other pictures you would like printed, up to a 13"x19", we can print them for you. And for shows and events, we will try to take at least one picture per vehicle, for $100 an event. After the event, we will provide you a CD or DVD of all unedited images for $50.

Ideal times to schedule a shoot will be within about an hour of sunrise, or about 2 hours during sunset. Also, any overcast day will be OK, but clear days are preferred. We can suggest a location, or you may choose anywhere in the Dayton area. We are on the Montgomery/Warren/Greene county borders in south Dayton, so you know where we would be coming from.

We will be attending the Bellbrook Lions Club Festival Car Show on 08/21/2010 so you can schedule or talk with us then. Contact us at photo@jgmconst.com if interested.

House For Sale

We are thinking about selling our current home here in Centerville, OH. We're not sure on the price yet as we are still crunching numbers, but we are thinking  around $350,000.

Details:
  • 2600+ sq.ft.
  • 2 story brick and cedar exterior, 5.5 acres with 32'x40' horse barn, corral, pasture and pond.
  • 3 bedrooms
  • 3.5 bathrooms
  • 13'x27' living room
  • 10'x11' dining room
  • 11'x18' eat in kitchen
  • 14'x17' family room/library
  • 1/2 bath and full bath on first floor
  • 8'x10' marble tiled entry
  • 12'x27' L shaped master bedroom w/ master bath and walk in closet
  • 12'x15' bedroom 3
  • 15'x18' bedroom 2 with access to hall bathroom
  • hall bath has 2 vanities, tub/shower and linen closet.
  • New carpet upstairs, new Pergo wood floors on first floor and tile in bathrooms.
  • 2 working wood burning fireplaces
  • 2 car attached garage with 10'x12' workshop/storage area and attic
Everything has been replaced, down to the drywall in most areas. New floors, new interior and exterior paint, new roof in 2009, new landscaping, new 6 panel interior doors, new wood trim, new outlets and switches, new plumbing fixtures, updated kitchen in 2007. Would make an excellent home for a horse lover or other agricultural purpose.

We are looking for a one level or tri-level with basement with 3500sq.ft. or more and about 1-2 acre lot and 3 or more car garage and possibly an extra garage. Also, a pool would be nice, but not required. Also, we would prefer something that would need little to no work to be move in ready.

Contact me at contact@jgmconst.com if interested.
