Welcome to Pop's Garage!

Pop's Garage, not a real place, so don't look for it in the Yellow Pages, lol. Actually, my wife has called me "Poppa" since before we got married, and I thought it would be a good name for a garage if I were to ever open one. So I'm using it here.

On to the purpose of this blog. I love pretty much anything to do with cars. Mostly old muscle cars, classic trucks, mini trucks, diesel trucks, hot rods and some sport compacts. Some times, I either get to working on a project, or have ideas for one and I like to share the info with others. There are also times I am working on a car for someone and I need to complain about the engineers bad ideas, or rave about the good ones. So this is my place to do that.

A little background on me and my automotive experience. I have been driving since 1992, when I turned 16. I have worked in the automotive industry in some way since 1994, off and on, either selling parts, delivering parts, installing parts or making parts. I have been in to building custom cars for just as long. I have built about 10 cars of my own and helped my friends on dozens more in the past. I have been in 5 car clubs since I was 16, and president of 3 of those 5. The club names were Syndicate (Dayton, OH), Furious Stylez (president), Crossroads Customs, 0-60 of Dayton (President), and Positive Perception (President, current club my wife and I have been trying to start since '08).

So that's all about me. Later I'll post about some past, present and future projects. C-ya!

Latest Garage Project

This week is going to be busy, especially since I'm starting this project on a Wednesday! Tonight, I purchased the materials to build 3 new storage shelf sections to get my tools organized and get a lot of other stuff off of the floor and out of the way. Another reason is because we'd like to get this house sold, and this project all together will help a ton. I am also going to paint the space and I need to do some repairs on the ceiling. I am also adding 8 4' fluorescent light fixtures hoping to help us see better. Anything will be better than the 3 single light bulbs we have in there now.

The shelves I am building are from a project in the September 2010 issue of The Family Handyman. All of the materials for a total of 24' of 7' tall by 2' deep shelves ran approximately $150.00. The materials for each 8' section consist of 8 2"x4"x8 for uprights, 8 2"x2"x8' for shelf braces run horizontally, 2 sheets of 4'x8'x3/4" plywood or OSB, I opted for OSB since it was still strong but less expensive. You'll also need screws in 1-1/2", 2-1/2" and 5". The 5" screws to screw the shelves to the wall seem to be hard to come by for me, I looked everywhere and didn't find them. So I got 3-1/2" screws and will either use L brackets or some other method to tie into the wall. I'm sure these shelves wont move when loaded, but you can never be too safe.

So, if anyone wants info on this project as I go along, please ask away!

So, until the next post, God Bless, keep the rubber side down, and get to wrenchin'! I hope my posts can be an inspiration to all who read them. John, "Pop"
